Preserving a family heirloom

A client brought her Grandfather's cherished compass. She recalls childhood days fishing the streams of Minnesota with her Grandfather. She wanted to do something other than put the compass in a cabinet or drawer. She wanted to wear. I could strongly relate as I use to fish with my Grandfather.

I designed and built a housing for the compass that could be worn as a pendant. The spiral design around the perimeter represents eternity. The pendant is Sterling Silver and 18k Yellow Gold. We made a 36 inch chain in Sterling Silver and 18k Yellow Gold. It is long enough for her double it over and still pass through the bail. We put a Fleur de Lis on the bail which represents the "Flower of Life". The compass needle is free to move. The back of the pendant is engraved with personal information. It was truly a pleasure making this piece.

"Two Hooks" Necklace

This Hand Made Sterling Silver, 18k Yellow Gold and Enamel engraved Necklace is proving to be popular with clients ... and for good reasons. It is very versatile for different uses. As shown below, you can hook the two hooks together, use the small connector as a center piece or hang various pendants. Either way, it has a strong and stately look with plenty of fine delicate metal work.

Two Hooks, "Hook to Hook" complete as it is ...or add more as shown below.

Small connector, used as shown or set with stones. This piece fits pendant bails
as shown below. Larger center pieces can be made and worn in this position
in contrast to pendants which drop down in position.

One side of a two sided pendant. Sterling Silver, 18k Yellow Gold,
engraved with hinged bail. Black Obsidian and Red Creek Jasper serve as
The background for the Fleur de Lis and Lion ornaments on the crest.

One side of a two sided pendant. Sterling Silver, 18kt Yellow Gold,
engraved with hinged bail. The center piece, set within our engraved bezel
is an antique French enamel portrait of a solder.

Research and Development ... Must always try new ideas!

In addition to producing our classics and our "tested and proven" items, we often find ourselves going down "paths of curiosity". These "paths" are inspired by a number of different experiences ... Mother Nature, archeology, historic art, etc. Sometimes they are inspired by clients. This necklace was inspired by multiple client's comments about the smaller "rough" slabs we have in working trays in the workshop. We noticed that clients favored stones that had some evidence of their original state in contrast to a finished cabochon. Below is an example. The finished cabochon on the left was produced from a rough stone similar in size and material to the one on the right. You can see the amount of material that is lost in the cutting process. The stone on the left could be flat lapped on top to give it a polish ...and nothing else done so it maintains its natural shape and texture on the sides.

Below is the first finished item we made using this concept. We will display it and we'll listen to clients opinions .... if they are motivated to share an opinion. If it goes unnoticed, we will learn from that as well. This necklace features a piece of natural Silver Ore. It is set in Sterling Silver. The clasp is a modification of our "S" clasp. The leather is a braided Nappa leather ... soft and supple.

The photograph does not properly reflect the Silver Ore.
In the photograph the stone looks "muddy" and uninteresting.
It is actually very intriguing with a variation of  colors and tones from beige to
dark chocolate brown accented with particles of pure silver reflecting light.

Interchangable "Three Row" Bracelet

The bracelets below are handmade in Sterling Silver.  The first bracelet features a beautiful Quartz based Chrysocolla which we cut in our shop. The rough stone came from my friend Robert's mine on the Superstition Mountains near Tombstone in southern Arizona.  It is interchangeable with a three strand Sterling Silver bracelet as shown in the second bracelet which features a gorgeous example of Moss Agate from Tennessee. also cut in our shop. This option also permits the center piece of both bracelets to be interchanged. The two "columns" , one on each side of the center piece, have a threaded post which can be removed. This features enables the center piece to be replaced as well as the bracelet options.

The three leather cords are  natural undied round cords.
They will naturally darken and take on a character of their own.
The color works well with the natural earth tone colors in the Chrysocolla.

This photo shows one of the two removable sides unthreaded.
The threaded post pulls totally out allowing the other bracelet options to be
 screwed into place.

This feature allows a very versatile use of the parts. With the two bracelets above, four combinations can be created ....Chrysocolla with leather, Chrysocolla with three strand bracelet, Moss Agate with leather, and Moss agate with three strand silver bracelet. An endless addition of center pieces of various stones can further expand the collection.

Sterling Silver and 18k Yellow Gold Dome Earrings by Ned Bowman / Bowman Originals

This is a beautiful pair of earrings we were asked to make by a client to give to a friend of hers. The earrings are hand made in Sterling Silver and 18k Yellow Gold. They have a 14k Yellow Gold post, as do all our earrings. The back is our custom " Fleur de Lis " Omega style back. We usually set round cabochons which we have cut into this earring, however, in this case we "set" polished domes with an 18k Yellow Gold ornament at center top. This is a one of a kind .... so far. As always, we listen to our clients. They often have great ideas ... as in this case!
